Orewa Heartbeat Reviews"...:The immense heart underlying these songs makes Orewa Heartbeat one of the most intensely human musical experiences in recent memory. " Clay Burton. Independent Music and Arts Inc. Full review: https://www.imaai.org/robin-kelly-orewa-heartbeat/ "The beauty of this album manifests itself in countless ways, but one of its chief qualities is how it never has to push on listeners too hard to elicit their favor and sympathy....Robin Kelly’s music has every bit of the healing quality to which he likely aspires and his artistry grows with each new release." Heather Savage . The Music Reviews. Full review https://themusic.reviews/music-reviews/robin-kelly-orewa-hearteat/ "Recorded at Manuka Studios, the indie nature of his recording shouldn’t ever prove misleading – the production values of this thirteen song collection are substantial and do a superb job highlights the across the board strengths of Kelly’s talent. …. Naturally, fans of singer/songwriters will find much to admire on Orewa Heartbeat, but even casual music fans will be hard pressed to find fault with the feeling, virtuosity, and intimacy conjured by Kelly on his newest release. ….Orewa Heartbeat concludes with the nakedly vulnerable “Someone Else’s Dream” and this is a purely piano driven piece with a particularly effective Kelly vocal and lyric – in fact, it’s no stretch to say his writing here ranks among the best on the album. What a profound, moving work. Robin Kelly’s Orewa Heartbeat is a gem of an album and deserves a hearing from anyone who values authentic, deeply felt music." Jason Hillenberg. Skope Magazine. Full review: https://skopemag.com/2018/03/14/robin-kelly-orewa-heartbeat "The old idea that someone needed to hail from the birthplaces of country, blues, and folk or, even more popular, the idea that white performers can’t perform blues credibly, is just that – an old idea conclusively disproven time and again. One more time, a foreign born performer, songwriter, and recording artist gives us an interpretation of traditional forms every bit as believable as anything from the icons preceding them....It’s a delectable platter Robin Kelly is serving up from the first with Orewa Heartbeat and there isn’t a real moment of filler discernible among the album’s thirteen tracks." Pamela Bellmore. Indie Music Reviews. Full review: https://www.indiemusicreviews.net/robin-kelly-orewa-heartb…/ "Music lovers will find few modern albums, in any genre, with the emotional depth and maturity we hear from Robin Kelly’s fifth full length studio album Orewa Heartbeat. The thirteen songs on this release are filled with energy as well, even on the more languid and moderately paced numbers, and Kelly takes on country, blues, and folk influences while frequently infusing them with a dash of the classical that impressively fills them out. A sure mark of the experience he’s accumulated over the course of five albums and counting is the even handed approach he takes to bringing these influences together in a seamless presentation that sounds natural, live, and never unduly affected. Much of the album’s thirteen tracks are built around his voice and acoustic guitar, but other string instruments play an important role in the mix, harmonica recurs throughout the running order, and there’s even some horns coming in. It’s deceptively ambitious from beginning to end. ….Orewa Heartbeat has something for every serious music listener and will likewise exert a tremendous amount of appeal for casual fans." Alonzo Evans. Razorfish Reviews. Full review: http://razorfishreviews.blogspot.co.nz/2018/03/robin-kelly_59.html "The investment he makes in his music, particularly this fifth album, is quite unlike much we hear from singer/songwriting stylists today. Instead, Kelly brings genuine poetic worth and a mastery of folk and classic country style together in potentially timeless musical vehicles. Nothing here is filler – instead, this baker’s dozen of tracks is full of vigor and life.....Robin Kelly’s fifth album is, arguably, his best yet and prove his artistry is showing no signs of slowing down." William Elgin. Vents Magazine Full review: http://ventsmagazine.com/2018/03/14/cd-review-orewa-heartbeat-by-robin-kelly/ "The thoughtfulness and enormous musicality that goes into Robin Kelly’s recordings are the clearest indications we have that this is a true artist who is steadily building one of the more impressive discographies in the modern music scene, indie or otherwise, today.... Orewa Heartbeat is appropriately titled as the solid pulse of humanity distinguishes each of its thirteen songs." Mindy McCall. No Depression. Full review: http://nodepression.com/album-review/robin-kelly-orewa-heartbeat " Robin Kelly’s fifth studio release Orewa Heartbeat is a seminal moment for this New Zealand based singer/songwriter. ….. His work as a physician certainly informs much of what’s going on here, but he’s never an artist who uses his personal beliefs as a cudgel cleaving all the art away from his writing and music. Instead, it deepens his talent and makes Orewa Heartbeat one of the best releases in recent memory. …. Orewa Heartbeat is a minor miracle of sorts, a collection that lifts listeners up without ever straining the borders of credulity." Sebastian Cole. GasHouse Radio. Full review: http://gashouseradio.com/robin-kelly-orewa-heartbeat/ "Orewa Heartbeat is an outstanding collection of songs aiming to delve deep into the reality of our experiences while avoiding any self-indulgence common to less artful practitioners of the form.....He ends Orewa Heartbeat with the album’s purest solo performance “Someone Else’s Dream” – solo meaning there is nothing but his voice and piano powering the song towards a satisfying conclusion. The album deserved an emphatic period at the end and Robin Kelly’s provided it – the baker’s dozen worth of songs on Orewa Heartbeat are fine, but this finale is among its finest." Lance Wright NeuFutur Magazine Full review: http://neufutur.com/2018/03/robin-kelly-orewa-heartbeat/ "A number of influences shine through and Kelly doesn’t shy away from indulging in some imaginative orchestration but at their heart, however, the material on Orewa Heartbeat has great intimacy born from a singer/songwriter working at the peak of his sensitivity...Much of the beauty in Robin Kelly’s art lies in the fact that, while it certainly has its own meaning for him, the open-ended nature of the songs allows us to take whatever we need away from the lyrics and music alike. It’s one of the many hallmarks distinguishing Orewa Heartbeat as a true work of art." Shannon Cowden. Indie Band Guru. Full review: http://indiebandguru.com/robin-kelly-orewa-heartbeat/ |
